Whitby Sea Festival is an annual festival which takes place in and around the historic Yorkshire seaport of Whitby, one of Britain's premier maritime heritage sites.

The festival celebrates Whitby and the Yorkshire Coast's proud connections to fishing, the sea and maritime heritage.

Since its beginnings in 1993 as The Captain Cook Festival and then for 12 years at Seafest in Scarborough, the event has staged some of the biggest gatherings of sea balladeers, shantymen, folk musicians and singers in the UK.

The festival promotes local musicians alongside those with international acclaim. So far, our programme has included the cream of the folk, roots, sea music and the shanty world .We have also enjoyed music from other nations including Senegal, Sicily, Canada, Eire, Luxembourg, Germany, Holland, France and the USA.

Once again the festival is based in The Met on Argyle Road, West Cliff where you will find our box office, Shop Point and the main venue for ticketed events. This year we have added the Rifle Club as a second venue. The Rifle Club is situated opposite Whitby Leisure centre and is a short walk from The Met . Some daytime events and workshops will be held here.

During Saturday and Sunday there will also be Shanties and Sea Songs aplenty at the Banstand and The Dock end – free for all to enjoy so make sure to catch them.

There's a great variety of activities across the weekend including Maritime – themed concerts, workshops, singarounds, sessions and the popular 'Song for the Sea' song competition.

Whitby Sea Festival brings the town alive with the sound of Shanties and Sea Songs.

Whitby Amateur Dramatic Society Present ‘Caught In the Net’ by Ray Cooney

Bigamist taxi driver John Smith is keeping his two families in different parts of Leeds, both happy and blissfully unaware of each other. However, his teenage children, a girl from one family and a boy from the other, have met on the Internet and are anxious to meet in person since they have so much in common name, surname and taxi driving dad! Keeping them apart plunges John into a hell hole of his own making.

His lodger Stanley could be a saviour, but he is about to go on holiday with his decrepit old father who turns up thinking he is already at the guest house. The situation spirals out of control as John juggles outrageously with the truth.

"A masterclass in the art of farce...The perfectly potty plot is a precession built laughter machine." - What's On

"Brilliant...The funniest play of the year." - Daily Mail

"Utterly magical...firework display of knockabout comedy." - Spectator

"A sheer joy from beginning to end." - Daily Telegraph

Start: 7.30pm / Doors: 7.00pm
